"The Beulah Switch Rods are constructed of IM8 graphite using bias ply roll up for maximum strength and lightness. The Beulah Switch rod is a series of fast action 10'6" rods that will be sold in the following sizes.4/5, 5/6 wt, 6/7 wt, 7/8 wt, 8/9wt and 9/10,10/11 wt. Because of their size and relative lightness, the Switch Rod has unlimited potential in a variety of casting and fishing applications. The Switch Rod allows an angler to cast with double haul, spey cast, roll cast, and two handed cast. The two handed cast is basically bringing the line back with a back cast and swinging the rod overhead with two hands, allowing the line to shoot forward. The first two hand overhead cast with the 9/10 shot the line 125 feet with power in reserve. This cast is easy to master and opens new opportunity coastal, stream and lake fishing. The Switch rods have been tested for a year and have performed well beyond expectations."
Beulah Switch Rod/Line Suggestions
These are some line recommendations to give you a general line parameters for each switch rod, please use these as a guide for what these rods can do.
4/5 switch rod line suggestion:
Single/ Overhead casting 165-190 grains
Traditional line tapers: WF and DT. Good overhand lines for nymphing, single hand or two hand overhead casting. Long tapers 42-46 ft are nice for short to medium distance roll casting and excellent long tapers for mending and speed control of the fly (s) and or indicator
~Cortland 444 sl precision 6.5wt
~Airflo Ridge presentation 7wt
~Rio Mainstream 7wt
~S.A. GPX taper 6wt
~Cortland 444sl Clear Camo Int. Sink 7wt. (for lake & slow moving water applications)
Specialty line tapers: Mainly WF Slightly shorter heads with higher grain concentration. Excellent roll casting lines for medium to medium long distances, good lines for longer distances w/minimal amount of false casting, great lines to cut through wind and make good fly presentations
~Beulah River extra 6wt
~SA , steelhead taper 6wt, GPX taper 6wt
~Rio Grande 6 wt
Spey casting-230-250 over 27 feet
Spey line Tapers: Designed for two-handed traditional spey style casting. Needs high grain concentration in a fairly short overall line length for maximum castability
~Beulah River extra 7wt, AirFlo 40+ 5 wt., Custom cut Shooting heads
Cross-over casting
Cross-over line tapers: are for those looking to find a line that is suitable for traditional overhead false casting, aggressive roll casting, and have the ability to spey cast.
~5wt, Rio outbound 5/6wt, Airflo 40 plus 5wt, Teeny Long Shot 5,6,7 wt
Recently at the Fly Fishing Show in Somerset, NJ I was given the opportunity to play with many of the rods Beulah currently offers and a few fly rods that they are currently testing. I can honestly say that I am nothing but impressed with the rods, construction and direction Beulah Fly Rods is currently headed. The 4/5 switch rod at 10'6" appears at first glace like a utterly silly concept for a fly rod. The initial concept shock is where the sillyness ends. This fly rod is all business. The aesthetics of this rod rival many custom rod builders efforts. Grips are turned out of quality cork with a mix of rubberized giving the rod a unique appearance. Guides are wrap clean and functional with excellent placement and thought to sizing. Looking at this rod from a far and up close you can tell it is a looker. Cosmetics aside I decided to hit the casting area after show hours, for a little session. Instantly I saw the potential in a rod of this weight and size. Casting the rod two handed in a European Style this rod effortlessly laid out 60ft of line, with tight loops and gentle lay down. Casting this rod in the casting area one could easily imagine fishing some of the larger trout waters located across the country. This rod will find favor among deep water nymph fisherman on the Lehigh River as well as dry fly anglers on the Upper Delaware. I expect that with in the next few months prior to PA's trout opening I will be adding one of these rods to my arsenal.
