1) Start up 7/10

Out of the box the SST2 is a dog, it is slow and lazy and lacks the crisp, clean, quick start up needed for fishing the tributaries of Lake Ontario. However quick removal of the two shielded bearings and cleaning in a strong degreaser and the character of this reel completely changes. With a little effort from the angler this reel is capable of fishing 2 gram floats in moderate current, bump it up to a 4gram float and the reel begins to fish it's self.

2) Durability of finish 6/10

The light anodized finish is more then adequate to protect the reel from the elements, however because it is just a surface treat heavy abuse on rocks causes scratches and gashes to occur. For the causal angler this finish will provide years of protection against even the harshest fishing conditions.

3)Easy of cleaning and part replacement 10/10

Every replaceable part on this centerpin can be easily removed with a few screw drivers. The fit of each part is snug but not tight allowing for easy dismantling and cleaning.

4)Aesthetics 7/10

What this reel lacks in start up it makes up in sturdiness and styling. The line bed is slightly on the narrow side and this coupled with the square edges of the back plate make this reel slightly uncomfortable for pinners with larger hands.

Raven has done an excellent job improving on the SST, with the most notable being the improved center screw which no longer backs out while fishing. The clicker is conveniently located on the side plate, is easy to operate and is strong enough to hold a back the rigged rod when walking. This one has found a place as my small trout and trib pin however I had confidence in this reel as a primary on many steelhead excursions this winter and spring.

Priced at well under $300.00 this reel is an excellent value and a compliment to any pinners arsenal.
